SPOS has been thoroughly tested during a winter season on the North Atlantic. The vessel performance of a chemical tanker of Jo Tankers was analysed in seasons with and without SPOS on board.
The results are remarkable when looking at the westbound voyage tracks: Before SPOS was onboard, the voyage tracks were quite conservative: south to 40° parallel and then westbound. The variation in tracks when SPOS was on board is much greater. This can only be explained by the availability of accurate weather information and the SPOS route advice.
In addition to various tracks, the weather encountered was also evaluated. The effect that the above had on vessel performance was shown in sailing time and average speed.
